Sixth Blog in a Series About the Net Promoter System Individual Products, Services, and Projects

Unless your company only sells a single product or service, you need a separate process to gather feedback about each product or service you sell. While benchmark and relationship surveys cover a variety of people and job roles at the customer end, product and service feedback should come from the end users. To get reliable and credible information, you should ask for it when you are explicitly planning to use it.

Sixth Blog in a Series About the Net Promoter System Individual Products, Services, and Projects 1

For a service contract that you are going to renegotiate (for example), get feedback from the end users before the negotiation starts and use it to present a more convincing case for renewal. For products, tell the end users that you are starting a new design cycle, solicit their suggestions, and tell them which suggestions were most common and will be included in the next product or version. If you have customers who are references for your product, pay particular attention to what they say.

Your most reliable feedback will come from customers who actively use the product or service. For this type of survey, I dont think it matters whether they have purchased it recently or not. Indeed, an end user may have no idea when the purchase decision was made.

If your survey is about something like software that has versions, you will need to ask the users what version they are using if you dont already know. If so, make sure you tell the users how to determine the version number.Project surveysAssuming you want to improve the way you plan and deliver customer projects, a formal feedback process is good practice.

I have never seen these done well and they are indeed tricky. I believe you should consider project surveys as the least reliable in your portfolio. The reasons are quite complex, and change somewhat between shorter (up to three months) and longer projects:The people who will answer the survey are most often chosen when the project is complete (for shorter projects) or when a major milestone has been achieved.

Sixth Blog in a Series About the Net Promoter System Individual Products, Services, and Projects 2

Since the project team normally chooses the people who should provide feedback, they have an understandable tendency to select only those who will give favorable answers. Ideally, this can be offset by agreeing the names or job titles of those who will respond in the project contract. Unfortunately, I have never seen this done, both because people want to use standard contracts, and because they do not want to waste time negotiating details.

Another possibility is to be clear, both in theory and in practice, that you are not going to measure the project team on the customer feedback. Emphasize that you will use the feedback to improve the processes and tools for all projects, as well as to plan the development of project team members. It is almost impossible to communicate this credibly.

Are you really willing to discard customer feedback when putting project team members through their performance reviews? The only thing left is to have a person outside the project team agree the names of those who will provide feedback. This can be the executive sponsor for the customer, if you have one, or the sales leader assigned to the customer.

For longer projects, the members of the project team and the overall project manager may change over time. It is quite common to see a first team for a proof of concept, a second team for a pilot and a third team for a comprehensive rollout. In such situations, you should not have a single feedback process, but have at least one for each phase.

Working purely by phase is deficient too, as lack of project management continuity across phases is a common customer complaint. While remaining aware of the aforementioned defects, my recommendation is to track trends by manager of project managers. It seems reasonable to expect that a single project manager will introduce the same conscious or unconscious bias to all project surveys over time.

Tracking at the manager level will smooth it out somewhat. Projects involving AlliancesMost people think of alliances between companies as being two-way affairs. However, it commonly takes three or more companies to implement a customer project, and any research process must take that into account.

If a customer receives a survey from only one of the companies involved in implementing a project, they are likely to be surprised. An example may help here. When I was managing certain software alliances at Compaq, I got a surprise.

I had Lotus as one of the services alliances I led at a worldwide level. Lotus had been acquired by IBM about 18 months previously. IBM encouraged them to continue to act as though they were independent.

One consequence of this was their love of Compaq. 55% of all the Lotus Notes installations were being sold on Compaq ProLiant servers, and the proportion was increasing slowly, to the irritation of Lotuss new masters. I was in their Cambridge Mass.

HQ, trying to work out how to use services to grow our joint business. It turned out that neither Lotus nor Compaq wanted to be Prime contractor for any Notes implementations. A simple two-way alliance was pointless.

Further discussion revealed that the largest Notes implementer on the planet was PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and that this was particularly the case in EMEA. I met repeatedly with the head of the PwC Notes practice in Zurich, and we were successful in some three-way projects with Lotus. (Then HP tried and failed to acquire PwC, ruining the PwC/Compaq work, though this is not directly relevant here.

) Two- and three-way alliances are quite common for customer projects. You need to agree a single approach to surveying the whole project and driving improvements together.Training surveysSince I have taken many training courses over the years, I have been surveyed many times.

Surveys tend to be quite long and to involve rating the teachers. Oddly, I dont recall ever being asked what any individual teacher could improve. I feel NPS can be used in a hierarchical way, starting with an overall course score, and the usual Why and Improve questions.

This can be followed by the same three questions for each teacher. I do not believe you should ask about the course material, facilities, catering, accommodation and so on. If they matter, they will come up in the written comments.

Unfortunately, trainers tend to want to train you on how to answer the surveys. They will typically show a slide that gives a sample score (always a 10), and sample comments, which are always positive. This is a misguided approach and means the trainers do not get many of the improvement suggestions they need.

Note that the Bain NPS emoticons at the top of this article are registered service marks and are used with permission. Looking forwardThe next article in this series will cover will be about how to handle transactional / episode research. As is often the case, the above is a slightly-edited version of a chapter in one of our books; in this case Net Promoter Implement the System All of our books are available in paperback and Kindle formats from Amazon stores worldwide, and from your better book retailers.

What are the advantages and disdvantages of the Canon 18-55 IS MKII vs IS STM kit lenses?According to the Wikipedia article comparing all Canon EF-S 18-55mm version the STM version has (in addition to the new STM motor) a new optical design (13 elements in 11 groups vs. 11 elements in 9 groups), internal focusing and an extra diaphragm blade (7 vs. 6)So, the EF-S 18-55mm IS STM is not just the EF-S 18-55mm IS II with the new motor but a completely new lens that seams to be slightly better than the old design in every way. Even if you do not need the advantage of the STM motor for video I see no reason to buy the older version (unless it's cheaper), I also do not see a compelling reason to upgrade for someone that already has the IS II but the new STM version is better.BTW, you can usually buy seconds hand kit lenses for next to nothing because a lot of people want to get rid of them when they upgrade, a quick look on eBay shows that the EF-S 18-55mm IS II has been sold for as little as $40

Furniture, Sculpture and Design Come Together at New Gallery
Furniture, Sculpture and Design Come Together at New Gallery
The walls of Rouge Concept, a new gallery on Queen East, fresh with a coat of paint, holds works of art, of course. But don't be surprised to also find one-of-a-kind side tables, small cabinets and cast glass decorative bowls. "The idea was to bring contemporary art furniture, sculpture and design elements together," says gallery co-owner, Christian Bernard Singer. "It's a sort of look back to the turn of the last century when art and design were one thought."Opposite the entrance, across the long expanse of a polished wood floor, hangs an imposing 2.3-metre-by-2-metre painting by Canadian artist Julie Oakes called "Big Head." Set against a deep black background, it depicts in fine detail the many subtle shades of black on a Doberman's head and upper body. A narrow brilliant light that shines from above turns the dog's chest and ears into molten gold. At the foot of the painting sits a small elegant geometric chair by Jens Stürup. A few feet away, a free-standing silkscreen, also by Oakes, serves as a room divider. Its wings enfold a "slumped" glass chair and shields the gallery's informal lounge area where a functional wall cabinet by Stürup assumes double duty as a piece of art above the big chocolate brown couch. Stürup, a native of Toronto, came back to live here only a few months ago after spending 20 years in Los Angeles as a director of photography in the film industry. His foray into furniture art started in 2005 when Stürup says he wanted a new creative outlet, one where he could work on his own rather than participate in a collaborative effort, such as filmmaking. "I got very inspired," he says. "I came to it very naturally and progressed from there."At first he experimented with plywood and plain veneers. Later he added dark and light veneers of different types of wood on the same piece. He has since incorporated colour, finishing the works with painted panels in soft shades. So far he has produced small tables, wall cabinets and chairs."Right now I'm just exploring elemental ideas that can be done on a smaller scale. I love the way this undulates," Stürup says, pointing to a wall-mounted cabinet with four doors set at an angle to each other for a wave effect. He has ambitions to make large integrated pieces in the future and perhaps even turn his hand to acquiring equipment that would allow him to fashion elaborate curves. For now, he's happy to have his work displayed at Rouge. Stürup met Singer and his partner Nancy Grenier through a mutual friend. "They were looking for furniture art and I emailed the photos to them. The next thing you know, they're asking me to come in," Stürup says. Asked about the real practicality of one of his chairs, for example, Stürup concedes he didn't fashion it for comfort. It's meant, he says, to serve as an accent. "A lot of accent pieces aren't comfortable," Singer adds. "You might have a couple of comfortable chairs and this wonderful sculptural piece that is actually functional and brings everything together, and brings interest to the space." Perhaps. But with endless talk about a recession, consumers might be willing to spend $60 for a set of glass coasters by Renato Foti. But will they pay $1,500 for Stürup's chair, $8,500 for Oakes' Doberman or $14,000 for her screen?Definitely, Singer says."We've had a sense of the recession (but only) in that instead of buying a new house, they're going to fix up what they have. They'll buy a fabulous piece of art to change the mood, change the feeling of the house so they feel like they have a new house."Singer also dismisses the notion that people living in condos wouldn't - or shouldn't - consider purchasing large canvases. On the contrary, he says many newer condos have the high ceilings that make the perfect backdrop for such art. The gallery's offerings and the way they're laid out in relation to each other aims to show how people can "live" with art, Grenier says. Rouge Concept opened in October. It's at 732 Queen St. For information visit rougeconcept.ca.

Which Dress for a Holiday Party?
sparkles are always more fun!!! The gold one sounds too dressy anyway...and why do not you use the extra $20 for something to help you exersize...work out video, sports bra, herbal supplements.1. What is that video!?I believe it's the "Tender Roni" video2. i think i got a ghost on video! (video attached!?I do not see anything at :43 secs, but at about 1:18-1:20 someone is in the window and if noone was in that house and you are sure noone was in the house, you have someone in the window. That's not a glare. I watched both parts like 20 times and I can not see it being a glare. It's not bright enough to be a glare. I paused and kept rewinding it,but if it was a glare,it would have been in all the windows of that floor. It's a ghost,or someone in the house3. Fellow Teenagersss: How about a survey?Chocolate chip TEENick Pandas Yes.. on Facebook. Nope. Not really lol. Miley Cyrus Yup, but I am getting them off in May! Or at least the top, hehe. Zebras! Eat gum off the ground. =/ Yup, pink. :) MY NIZZLE! Basketball, all the way! :D - OCD4. Can a blu ray dvd still work even without a blu ray tv?Your post indicates you have several ... misunderstandings. Let me clear them up. You cannot watch a "DVD in BluRay". You can play a DVD in a BluRay player - but a DVD contains standard def video. The BluRay player will up-convert the video to HD, but... it can only do so much. If the movie/show is one you love - take back the DVD and buy the version on a BluRay disk. This will give you HD video (and should look stunning on a HDTV). You will also need a BluRay player so shop for one. A basic model is about $70-$80. You will also need a HDMI cable. I like the $10 "Media Bridge" brand cables from Amazon. I have just re-cabled my system with 4 of them ($43 including shipping) and they work great. IMPORTANT: Look at the back of your HDTV. Do you have a spare HDMI input? If not - there could be some issues. Post another question if this is the case.5. How to prevent or handle when vandalism happens to your car parked on the side of the street??That does not qualify as vandalism, maybe criminal damages if any actual damage occurred, but if no damage was done, maybe criminal mischief. get a wireless portable camera and set it out toward the street where you park. Many of them come with hard drives that can store long portions of video. You can get them for as little as 60 bucks.6. What is the best indoor exercise to burn calories and work up a sweat?okay. i will give you an exercise that requires no equipment, burns calories and works up a sweat and almost nobody knows about it. hindu squats. go to youtube and type in matt furey hindu squats and watch video on how to./ i like to do no equipment exercise but if i could choose have an exercise machine i would get a treadmill with electronic elevation and a heart monitor and i would walk for hrs. But i can do hindu squats anytime and anywhere and no equipment necessary7. For blogging about nail art: Should I buy a superzoom bridge camera or a DSLR?I think both cameras are wrong for you:Nails are small, to fill the frame with a nail you need a lens with macro capability, the 18-55 kit lens can not do macro. The most important thing for getting images just right is getting the lighting right, the FZ45 does not have a flash hotshoe and can not use external flashes. You can get the D5100 (or any other DSLR) with a macro lens instead of the kit lens (or in addition to it, the kit lens can still be useful). You can get a mirrorless camera with a a standard hotshoe and a macro lens, this will be cheaper than a DSLR but you will not have such an extensive selection of cheap Chinese accessories like you can find for a Canon or Nikon DSLR.And you can also find a fix lens compact camera with an hotshoe, but high-end compacts tend to cost as much as a mirrorless camera or an entry level DSLR making them a bad deal.Once you start taking pictures with your new camera you are likely to find that for exactly the image you want to make you will also need an external flash and some flash modifiers, for video you will probably need a tripod.

Installing Laminate Flooring Over Damaged Floor.?
Installing Laminate Flooring Over Damaged Floor.?
The pitted concrete should not matter since tack strips are out on the perimeter anyway. If it was a high traffic spot I may fill them1. Do I have to put plywood down on wooden sub-floor when installing laminate flooring?no it would actually be better not to so the heights are the same in the transition. You will also be putting down the foam that will take care of any imperfections in the sub floor2. With radiant floor heating, how much more heat would you get using ceramic tile over laminate flooring? Would the extra cost be worth it?The thicker the floor, the longer it will take to heat up. Warm ceramic may feel warmer than laminate and may stay warmer longer. But cold ceramic stays cold longer. We recently installed a ceramic floor over cement board over plywood having the radian tubing embedded in it, over the subfloor, which has 4 inches of foamed insulation under it. This 350-sq-ft "radiator" of the new eat-in kitchen addition is more than sufficient to heat the entire 780 sq ft room -- as long as you do not expect it to warm up fifteen minutes after you switch it on.3. How do I ensure my concrete floor is "flat" for laminate flooring? To use the string method you need a length of strong string and a tool called a line level . The line level cost's under 5 bucks . What you do is anchor one end of the string to the wall at a specific height using whole numbers- [If you use 3' you can use a 4' level to insure that you have a perpendicular measurement to the floor ] hook the line level on the string and with the help of an assistant stretch the string to the opposite wall. When the string is level ,anchor it. You now have a level line across the room. Take your tape measure and measure the distance from the line to the floor along various points. Record on a piece of graph paper , change locations and repeat as needed. You will wind up with a topographical profile of your floor.4. Laminate Flooring, how do I clean without leaving streaks.?Laminate floors are very low maintenance. Ironically, if you use a lot of cleaning products on them, they will actually look worse...they will get smudges and streaks, like you are experiencing. And steam can absolutely ruin laminate floors. It can cause warping and even cause the veneer to peel right off. Having said this, exactly how do you maintain a laminate floor? Mostly just by vacuuming it. When you need more than a vacuuming, use a microfiber mop and plain old water. No cleanser, no vinegar, no nothing...just water. Let the mop do the work. Microfiber is fantastic at removing dirt and streaks and does not need a cleanser to help. In your case, I would definitely vacuum and then mop with a microfiber mop. Wet the mop and use it. No need to dry the floor, but also do not let water pool on the floor. You want a good damp mop, but not puddles of water. (Small streaks of water are ok.) If you do not already have a microfiber mop, you can buy them at Walmart, Target, Kmart, Home Depot, and even Dollar General. I've never used anything but a vacuum and a microfiber mop (plus water) on our laminate floors and they still look fantastic after all these years. Hope this helps. -5. Has anyone bought/installed QUICKSTYLE Laminate flooring? Looking for comments. NOT the same as QUICKSTEP?Quickstyle Laminate Flooring6. How do I edge a curved sunken room with laminate flooring? If I understand you correctly , the step down is curved. If this is the case, you can t with a laminate. Since it needs to float, you cant use any thing on the edges to cover the edges as well as protect and go over the laminate edge since you need something to cover open laminate edges to "hold" it down. Straight edges, they make special stairnosings to properly do this. There are rubber edge pcs they make you carpet and vinyls to do curves but wouldn t work and look right on laminate. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar ( with pictures if that helps) . I ve attended several installation seminars as well installed a few 100,000 s/f. GL

Maximizing Your Trade Show ROI Is Not As Difficult As It Seems
Maximizing Your Trade Show ROI Is Not As Difficult As It Seems
Trade shows have quite a few advantages, no doubt - you get your brand name out, and then there's this golden opportunity of showcasing your products, nurturing your relations with the existing customers and getting new customers on board. They are a win-win, or are they? What if the money you spend on these shows doesn't really translate into revenue? Discouraging, right? Well, don't give up, not just yet. Rather do all you can to maximize your ROI.Get The Most Out Of Trade ShowsStart with a press release. Come up with one that's good enough to generate instant buzz, and distribute it online. Of course, you'll be including some keywords, but make sure they are all relevant to your products and services. And yes, don't forget to include a link to your website.Let your website do the talking. Those who visit your website should know of your participation. Have a clear "call-to-action", one that they find difficult to miss. Placing the CTA right on the homepage is a good idea.Invest in PPC, but only if the conventional means yield little to no result. There's no point in increasing your investment if you are not sure of the returns in the first place.Take to blogging. You need to get the word out, and a blog would help you do just that.Make the most of the social media. Create a hashtag and encourage people to spread the news, the news of your participation that is.Don't you have a YouTube channel like already? If you don't, create one and post a video that offers enough reasons to people to come and visit you at the show.Go digital, before, during and after the show. Your brochures and flyers would end up in the trash can. Save yourself some time, money and energy and invest in digital alternates - a pen drive with the necessary information should suffice.Don't just focus on the customers. Invite your business partners and your vendors as well. The more people are at your booth at any given time, the more likely it is to turn into a huge success. And as already mentioned, trade shows are also about building relationships.Ignoring the existing customers is a big no-no. Yes, you do want to entice the prospects, but not at the cost of those who have helped you reach where you are. Take some time out to meet with them, or better still, invest in a loyalty program, giving them yet another reason to come your way.A press kit could go a long way in spreading the word, if it includes everything that the journalists, editors and bloggers look for.Work on in-booth presentations and demos for your visitors, and make sure that the content doesn't bore them to death. Get your marketing team involved.Video loops are also a fun way of ensuring that the visitors sit up and take notice. Shoot videos that give them an inside view of your company and bring them closer to your team. Give them a virtual tour of sorts, unless of course you are actually thinking of getting some VR gears, in which case you could have a real edge over the competition.Trade show ROI is not a tough nut to crack. Posting photos of the show online, following up with the leads and thanking them for showing up, making the visitors feel welcomed when they are the booth, anything and everything that increases engagement should do the trick·RELATED QUESTIONWhich kind of display showcase do you like for your jewelry store? If I were you, I'd like a jewelry showcase suit for my jewelry store. That would be a bright and simple store. With warm color painted wall, like off-white, warm yellow, mint-green, bright light which won't make people uncomfortable, of course, the most important decoration is display showcase. I want a display showcase suit, there are different height of display kiosk, which can show people the merchandise from different angles. Also a reception counter is necessary for checking out. And a wall-mounted showcase is necessary too.

Portable Video Projectors - Video Projector Buying Guide ...
Portable Video Projectors - Video Projector Buying Guide ...
Portable Video ProjectorsMany video projectors on the market today are small and light enough to easily move from place to place, even if they're not labeled as portable. If portability is a major factor in your purchase, though, that may not be enough. If you travel with the projector, you're probably looking for something that meets these criteria:To ensure a video projector has these features, look for those specifically designed for portability. Today, portable video projectors range in size and weight, so start by looking for one you're comfortable carrying around. From there, look for high brightness levels. Brighter is better if you expect to use the projector in rooms with a lot of ambient light, like windowed conference rooms or dimly-lit lecture halls. While purchasing a portable projector means you might not be buying a screen or mounting mechanisms, it likely will involve purchasing a case. Look for cases designed to protect delicate electronic equipment like video projectors. Estimate $100 to $200 for a well-constructed tote or carrying case.By going portable, you don't have to give up HD or 3-D technology. For example, the InFocus IN1112 Projector is PC 3-D ready. While its native resolution is 1280 by 800, the IN1112 supports a maximum resolution of 1920 by 1200 and HDMI connections for 1080i and 1080p content. The IN1112 weighs only 2.7 pounds (1.2 kilograms) and retails for $1022 [source: InFocus].No matter which video projector you use, don't let higher specifications or higher prices lead you to assume you're getting a better product. Read both positive and negative product reviews for each projector you're considering. When you read a review, consider whether the user's setup environment is similar to your own to determine if you could have the same experience. You may be surprised to discover that some inexpensive and lesser-known brands of video projectors work quite well for situations like yours.Even if you don't buy your video projector in a store, another thing you might consider is visiting a store that specializes in designing and installing home theater systems. Just talking to a representative can help you match the right technology to your environment. If you're not comfortable setting up the equipment after you buy it, these experts might offer installation services, too.Through this article, we've looked at the key specifications and features of video projectors and what to consider when selecting and purchasing one. For lots more information on buying video projectors, slide on over to the next page.

Most Commonly Asked Questions About Video
Most Commonly Asked Questions About Video
Do you want to know about video? Here are some frequently asked questions.1. Brightness control in Windows 10 doesn't workThe Device Manager shows two "Base System Device"s with a yellow exclamation mark. You need to find the Video driver for your laptop (and any other drivers). Go to the laptop manufacturer's Support Site and look for the Drivers. You may need to update both BIOS and Chipset for Video to work2. Which has better quality: Camcorders or Digital Camera and works FINE on youtube?HELPP?digital camera is not designed for video (even it can do HQ video). most camera has no auto focus and is harder to handle a camera to do video shooting (u need to look at the screen in very odd angle). so, go for a digital camorder, it gives u larger capacity (longer the video) and longer battery life. for format, both camera and digital camorder should work on youtube (you may need a software to reduce the file/resolution size before u upload to youtube, so the format is not important as it will convert it anyway). for camorder, sony. for camera, canon or nikon.3. Canon G11 or G12, What one to buy?Go with Canon G12 # DIGIC 4 Image Processor combine to create Canon's HS SYSTEM for improved low light performance # Shoot 720p HD video in stereo sound; HDMI output # Canon's Hybrid IS compensates for angular and shift camera shake during close-up shooting # 5x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer; 28mm wide-angle lens; optical viewfinder4. How can I get 5.1 surround with my Xbox and bluray player? This is the best way to hook up your devices by using a hdmi cable for hd audio and hd video. - 1st hdmi cable to hdmi output on device to hdmi input on receiver for audio, then 2nd hdmi cable to hdmi output on receiver to hdmi input on tv for video (hdmi video passthroughs to tv untouched). - Receiver menu -> manual setup -> hdmi setup -> hdmi audio setup -> send audio to amp (not passthrough to tv). OR run either a s/pdif optical or s/pdif coaxial to sound system if only sound system has no hdmi, R/W is only 2 channels. For audio cables: From best to least: - HDMI or Displayport cables: is capable of up to 8 channels of audio and up to 24-bit-depth with up to 192,000hz sample rate at the lossless/hd compression surround sound formats. - S/PDIF coaxial or s/pdif optical cables: is capable of up to 6 channels of audio and up to 20-bit-depth (16 or 24 optional) with up to 48,000hz sample rate at the lossy/non-hd compression surround sound formats. - Scart or RCA R/W composite audio cables: is capable of up to 2 channels of audio and analog has maximum audio quality. RCA G/B/G/B/T/P for other channels. - (Hdmi, displayport, s/pdif coaxial, s/pdif optical is digital audio), (scart or rca r/w or headphone jack is analog audio).5. can someone clarify this about DSLR cameras? As others have said, you can do multiples of up to 30 minutes - but that misses the point a bit. If you are mainly doing long bursts of video recording, why use a DSLR? The DSLR sensors are not designed for long continuous bursts of video. They are designed for photographs with video bolted on as an afterthought. You wo not get power zoom on a DSLR. Your zoom range will be limited because most DSLR lenses are short zooms - and those zooms will be relatively expensive and heavy. AF is often not available in video mode on DSLRs - and when it is available is often is not very fast and sometimes you get the AF and other camera noises on the video. Also, why pay for an expensive 12MP sensor when your 1920x1200 resolution HD video only needs 2MP? Better still, a high quality 3CCD camcorder will have 3 sensor, one each for the red, green and blue channels, which would give you better colour depth. If your primary objective is video, get a proper video camcorder, not a DSLR.6. when hooking up ps3 system can you use a hdmi (ps3) to dvi and if you can do you need any other cables.?correct-HDMI to HDMI will carry audio and video but HDMI to DVI will only carry video. You will need audio cables

The Easiest Way to Download YouTube Videos Using Python
The Easiest Way to Download YouTube Videos Using Python
In one of my first articles on Medium, I showed how to train a Convolutional Neural Network to classify images coming from old GameBoy games Mario and Wario. After over a year, I wanted to revisit one aspect of the process downloading videos (and potentially audio) from YouTube videos and extracting frames as images. We can use such images for various machine learning projects.SetupIn my previous article, I used a library called pytube to download the videos. However, after some changes introduced by YouTube, it is not really usable anymore any attempt to download videos results in KeyError: url_encoded_fmt_stream_map. Also, the library is not actively maintained anymore. That is why in this article I suggest using pytube3, which is a fork of the original pytube library and has the error fixed (it only works with Python 3). All the functionalities of the original library are preserved and we actually still use import pytube to import the library (even though we install it using pip install pytube3).Below I present the list of all the imports required for this article:from pytube import YouTube# miscimport osimport shutilimport mathimport datetime# plotsimport matplotlib.pyplot as plt%matplotlib inline# image operationimport cv2Downloading a videoIn this part, I present how to download a YouTube video using Python. I will use a classic video game from GameBoy Mega Man: Dr. Wilys Revenge. The first step is to create an instance of the YouTube class using the link to the video we want to download.video YouTube(' youtube.com/watch?vNqC_1GuY3dw')Using this object, we can download the video/audio, and inspect some of the properties of the video itself. Some of the interesting methods we can use are:length length of the video in secondsrating the rating of the videoviews the number of viewsThe next step is to inspect the available streams using the streams method. We can chain it with the all method to see all the available streams.video.streams.all()Running that line of code returns the following list of media formats:For a more in-depth description of the options regarding the media formats and working with streams, I refer to pytubes documentation available here.Lets narrow down all the available streams to mp4 files using the filter method:video.streams.filter(file_extension "mp4").all()Running the code results in the following selection:In this case, we will use the first available option, the one in 360p (resolution). To download the video, we first indicate which one we want to download by using the itag and then download the file using the download method. The full code for downloading the video is as follows:video.streams.get_by_itag(18).download()In the download method, we can also specify the destination path for the video. The default value is the current directory.Extract frames from the videoI created a special class called FrameExtractor to as the name pretty much reveals it extract individual frames from the video and save them as images. The class is defined as follows:While instantiating the object of the FrameExtractor class, we need to provide the path to the video we want to work with. In the __init__ method, we also extract some characteristics of the video such as the total number of frames and the frames per second (FPS). In general, the class provides functionality to extract every x-th frame from the video, as the difference between any two neighboring frames will be minimal. We provide a few convenience methods as well. All the methods are described below:get_video_duration prints the duration of the videoget_n_images prints the number of images that will be extracted given we extract every x-th frame (indicated by every_x_frame)extract_frames this is the main method of the class, which is used to extract the images. The bare minimum is providing the value for every_x_frame and the name of the image (the numbers indicating the sequence will be added automatically at the end of the name). By default, the images will be saved in the current directory. We can also provide a path to the desired directory (dest_path), and if it does not exist, it will be created for us. We can also specify the format of the image file, the default is JPG.Now it is time to actually use the class. We start by instantiating the object of the FrameExtractor class:fe FrameExtractor('Game Boy Longplay 009 Mega Man Dr Wilys Revenge.mp4')Next, we investigate the length of the video:fe.get_video_duration()# Duration: 0:39:48.333333As an example, lets assume we want to extract every 1000th frame. To calculate the number of images extracted using this setting, we run:fe.get_n_images(every_x_frame1000)# Extracting every 1000 (nd/rd/th) frame would result in 71 images. As the last step, we extract the images:fe.extract_frames(every_x_frame1000, img_name'megaman', dest_path'megaman_images')# Created the following directory: megaman_imagesThe indicated directory did not exist prior to using the extract_frames method, so it was automatically created and we saw a printed statement confirming this. Finally, we define a short function for viewing the downloaded images:def show_image(path): image cv2.imread(path) plt.imshow(image) plt.show()show_image('megaman_images/megaman_61.jpg')Running the code results in displaying the following image:ConclusionsIn this article, I described how to download videos from YouTube using the pytube3 library and coded a custom class used for extracting frames as images from the downloaded videos. A potential modification to the class is to account for skipping the first n seconds of the video, as the beginning often contains title screens, company logos, etc. The same could be done about the end of the video. However, for the time being, we can also account for that by manually deleting the images that are of no use to us.You can find the code used for this article on my GitHub. As always, any constructive feedback is welcome. You can reach out to me on Twitter or in the comments.I recently published a book on using Python for solving practical tasks in the financial domain. If you are interested, I posted an article introducing the contents of the book. You can get the book on Amazon or Packts website.·RELATED QUESTIONi just download videos and they are avi files, so how do i put it on a disc and watch it on a dvd player? You need dvd authoring software and a dvd burner/drive

Jewish Leaders Outraged at Dachau Gate Theft
Jewish Leaders Outraged at Dachau Gate Theft
Jewish leaders in Germany voiced outrage Monday over the of the gate to the former Nazi concentration camp Dachau with the chilling inscription "Arbeit macht frei" ("Work will set you free"). Police said they were following leads but had no concrete information about the theft of the forged iron gate, discovered early Sunday at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial near the southern city of Munich."This desecration is horrible and shocking," the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Dieter Graumann, told Bild daily. "Whoever did this is either sick or evil. Probably both."Holocaust survivor and vice president of the International Dachau Committee Max Mannheimer said he was "horrified that Nazis apparently desecrated the memorial to those murdered here and violated the reverence due to such a place." The head of the memorial centre, Gabriele Hammermann, called the theft a "deliberate, reprehensible attempt to deny and obliterate the memory of the crimes committed in this place" which aimed "to demolish the memorial at its very core." var current_url = window.location.href; function PushOpeningPicture() dataLayer.push('event': 'GA_Event_zynet', 'Category': 'Article Gallery', 'Action': 'Show', 'Label': '); jQuery(document).ready(function() function _isMobile() var isMobile = (/iphone|ipod|android|blackberry|fennec/).test(navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase());return isMobile;var isMobile1 = _isMobile();if (isMobile1 == false) jQuery(".artImageLightbox").colorbox(fixed:true); if(typeof isMobile !== 'undefined' && isMobile) jQuery(".artImageLightbox").colorbox(rel:'group3', transition:"none", width:"100%", height:"400px"); else jQuery(".artImageLightbox").colorbox(rel:'group3', transition:"none", width:"980px", height:"551px"); yq("a.artImageLightbox").click(function(event) event.preventDefault(); ); var imagesArray = yq( "div[id^='citvCompId']" ); yq.each(imagesArray, function( index, value ) var imgTitle;var imgCredit;var imgTitleFinal;var imgTitleFinalAlt;imgTitleFinalAlt = '';imgTitle = yq(value).children().find('.citv_title').html(); imgCredit = yq(value).children().find('.citv_credit').html() || yq(value).children().find('.ya_citv_credit').html();imgTitleFinal = ""if (imgTitle != null)var lengthTitle = 90; var imgTitleLength = imgTitle.length;var TitleTrimmed;TitleTrimmed = imgTitle;if (imgTitleLength > lengthTitle) TitleTrimmed = imgTitle.substring(0, 90); TitleTrimmed = "...";imgTitleFinal = "" TitleTrimmed "" ; if (imgCredit != null)imgTitleFinal = "" "(" imgCredit ")" "" ;yq(value).find('a').attr('title' , imgTitleFinal); var str;var res;str = value.id;res = str.replace("citvCompId", ".magnifyPiccitvCompId");imgTitleFinalAlt = '';if (res != null) yq(value).find(res).attr('title' , imgTitleFinalAlt); yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).css('display', 'block');yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).css(background: "url(/images/articlepiclightbox/enlarge.png)")yq('#'value.id).mouseover(function() yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).css('display', 'block'); ); yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).mouseover(function() yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).css(background: "url(/images/articlepiclightbox/enlarge-over.png)"); ); yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).mouseout(function() yq('.magnifyPic'value.id).css(background: "url(/images/articlepiclightbox/enlarge.png)"); ); )yq('.artImageLightbox .ya_main_relative_img').mouseover(function() yq(this).siblings('.ya_enlarge_button').fadeIn(200).css('display', 'block'); );yq('.artImageLightbox .ya_main_relative_img').mouseout(function() yq(this).siblings('.ya_enlarge_button').fadeOut(200).css('display', 'none'); ); );German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Dachau last year (Photo: AP)Police were examining whether neo-Nazis committed the crime, but were ready to follow all possible leads, said local police chief Thomas Rauscher. The theft happened on the night of Saturday to Sunday, between the rounds of security guards watching the site which has no video surveillance system. The head of the memorial at the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, Piotr Cywinski, called the theft "an attack against a symbol, an attack against remembrance," said a statement by the Dachau memorial.A sign with the same inscription at Auschwitz was stolen in 2009, sparking a global outcry. The mastermind of that theft, Swedish neo-Nazi Anders Hoegstroem, was caught and jailed for two and a half years. The metal sign was eventually recovered cut up into three pieces, leading museum officials to display a replica above the entrance until it was restored in 2011.The letters set inside the gate at Dachau were also a replica, dating from 1965, after the original slogan was removed from the gate after the US liberation of the camp at the end of World War II.The slogan once aimed to present the concentration camp as a "work and re-education camp.""At the same time, these words denote the cynical attitude of the SS to the inmates, for forced labor was one of the primary means of terror in the concentration camps," the statement said. The Dachau camp opened in 1933, less than two months after Adolf Hitler became German chancellor, as a prison camp for political prisoners. It became a death camp during World War II, killing more than 41,000 Jews before it was liberated by US troops on April 29, 1945.Some 800,000 visitors now visit the site each year.German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who visited Dachau last year, was due on Tuesday to accept an award from an association of Dachau survivors at an event in Berlin.
